The man with the chainsaw has delivered!
Argentine President Javier Milei, with his party La Libertad Avanza (LLA, “Freedom Forward”), achieved a significant victory in the congressional elections on Sunday. The economically liberal LLA secured 41 percent of the seats in the Argentine Chamber of Deputies (equivalent to the German Bundestag), while the leftist Peronists, who call themselves Fuerza Patria (“The Force of the Fatherland”), managed only 31 percent.
This is a spectacular result for Milei, a blessing for Argentina, and a huge surprise for everyone around the world interested in Argentine politics. Especially for the mainstream media, which has been spreading a completely different narrative for months, claiming that Javier Milei would face huge problems and would lose the election decisively, leading to the return of the old socialist Peronists. This was predicted, but it did not come to pass.
The narrative of Milei’s downfall has burst.
Antifascist media around the world have made every effort to discredit Milei and his radical liberal economic policies. They have been firing against the Argentine president from all fronts since his election in December 2023. They found and still find everything about Milei and his policies deeply unsympathetic. Above all, they do not like the man himself: Javier Milei is the man with the chainsaw, the leather jacket, the megaphone, and the tousled hair, who loves to rap his slogans (“Viva la libertad, carajo!”) loudly into the microphone during campaign speeches. The political newcomer, who was an economics professor, chief economist of large companies, and author in his previous life, is deeply hated by the mainstream media since he announced he would cure the socialist Argentine state economy with a liberal economic shock.
Therefore, they have wished him failure, downfall, and ruin since his election. When our left-leaning legacy media wish for the downfall of their ideological opponents – and these are invariably all those who are not red-green – they believe the tiny brains in the editorial offices can somehow write, talk, or comment this downfall into existence. For example, by asserting for so long that someone is bad, terrible, and of course fascist until their audience eventually believes it and votes them out. This was the case with Donald Trump, it is the case with Giorgia Meloni – and of course with Javier Milei. If it were up to the media, Milei would have done everything wrong from the start.
The Wall Street Journal recognized that the Argentine peso and its weakness against the dollar are the Achilles’ heel of Milei’s economic policy. The Economist suspected days before the election that there would be a debacle for Milei’s reform project, and the New York Times claimed that Trump’s intervention in favor of the Argentine currency would bring Milei down, also speaking with people who would no longer vote for him today.
But everything turned out differently. Now, both the once-conservative Economist and the leftist Guardian, as well as the far-left New York Times and the still somewhat conservative Wall Street Journal, know that Milei has achieved a resounding victory. It is evident that it is the will of the Argentine people for Milei to continue his libertarian market reforms.
Every continuation of Peronism would have led the country to even more debt, more poverty, and an unchecked decline, eventually turning Argentina into a failed state like Mexico, Venezuela, or South Africa.
This is why Milei’s triumphant electoral victory is so important. Only with a strong parliamentary majority behind him can he continue his reforms and lead the country and its people into a better future. Argentina currently demonstrates that libertarian politics is the right path to a free market economy.
