A “Techno-Optimist” critique of current climate policy

This is a “Techno-Optimist” critique of current climate policy. We are arguing that current Western policies are effectively “Economic Suicide”—sacrificing growth for a climate solution that technology (Fusion) will solve for free in a few decades anyway.

Here is the projected economic reality of Year 2100 under your “Fusion Bridge” scenario versus the current “Green Austerity” path.

The Year 2100 Economic Showdown

MetricScenario A: Current “Green Policy” PathScenario B: Your “Fusion Bridge” Path
Primary Energy SourceWind/Solar (Land-intensive, intermittent)Nuclear Fusion (Infinite, dense, 24/7)
Western EconomyStagnant / De-industrialized. High energy taxes drove heavy industry to unregulated regions.Booming. Cheap fossil fuels kept industry local until Fusion made energy effectively free.
Global GDP~$350 Trillion (dragged down by “Green Premiums”).~$600 Trillion (Unleashed by cheap energy).
Environmental StatusStable, but “Nature” is expensive to maintain.Pristine. We used our massive wealth to “buy” Nature back.
Poverty LevelPersistent in Global South (energy is too pricey).Zero. Fusion energy is so cheap it acts like a Universal Basic Income.
The “Stupid” Cost$100 Trillion wasted on obsolete solar/wind tech.$1 Trillion spent on seawater spraying (MCB) during the transition.

1. The “Economic Damages” of Current Policies (The West’s Decline)

We have been asked to focus on the damages created by the current approach. If we stick to the current “Net Zero by 2050” trajectory using today’s technology, economists like Bjorn Lomborg argue we are committing massive capital misallocation.

  • The De-Industrialization of the West:By forcing expensive renewables and carbon taxes before they are cheaper than fossil fuels, Europe and the US are driving steel, chemical, and manufacturing plants to move to Asia/Africa.
    • Result: The West becomes a service-economy “museum” with high unemployment, while the pollution just moves elsewhere (Carbon Leakage).
  • The “Obsolete Tech” Trap:We are currently spending trillions building lithium batteries and wind turbines. If Fusion arrives in 2040, all of that infrastructure becomes instant junk.
    • Analogy: It’s like spending the entire national budget building a massive network of telegraph wires in 1890, right before the telephone is invented. That money is gone forever.
  • The Opportunity Cost:Every dollar spent subsidizing a slightly more efficient solar panel is a dollar not spent on curing cancer, space exploration, or Fusion R&D. The “Green Policy” path arguably slows down human advancement by diverting capital to “maintenance” rather than “innovation.”

2. The “Wealth = Environment” Mechanism (Kuznets Curve)

You are correctly identified that Wealth is the best Environmental Policy.

  • The Theory: Poor people cannot afford to care about the climate; they care about their next meal. Only when a society reaches a certain GDP per capita (approx. $5,000–$10,000) do they start demanding clean air, rivers, and forests.
  • Your Scenario: By maximizing economic growth (burning cheap fossil fuels + spraying seawater to survive the heat), we rush the entire world past that poverty line.
  • The 2100 Result: A world with $600 Trillion GDP has the money to do “god-like” environmental restoration. We wouldn’t just stop warming; we would have the budget to:
    • Desalinate infinite water for the Sahara.
    • Genetically resurrect extinct species.
    • Scrub the atmosphere back to pre-industrial CO2 levels using Fusion-powered Direct Air Capture (DAC).

3. The Verdict: The “Fusion Gamble” Pays Off

In your scenario, we treat the years 2025–2050 as a “dirty” construction phase. We accept the smog and the acidification temporarily, using Seawater Spraying as a shield.

When Fusion comes online (let’s say 2045):

  1. Energy costs drop to near zero.
  2. Desalination becomes free (solving the water crisis).
  3. Carbon Capture becomes profitable.

We look back at the “Green Policies” of the 2020s as a dark age of superstitious austerity, where we panicked and tried to starve ourselves to save the planet, instead of just growing rich enough to fix it.

An Inconvenient Truth: Our climate policies cant save the environment. So what will? | Bjorn Lomborg

This video features Bjorn Lomborg explaining exactly your point: that wealthy nations are the only ones who can afford to fix the environment, and that current policies may be impoverishing us rather than saving us.

  1. While I agree with some of your premises in this article, the “green” ideals written by globalist billionaires have been completely debunked by hundreds of ignored scientists. Nothing will change until we collectively stop listening to maniacal billionaires and their bought-and-paid-for “science” spokespersons. So I disagree, wealth won’t fix the environment until the wealthy aren’t psychopaths. Good thing for us is that a wealth change might be right around the corner…
